A Mediterranean Escape: Exploring the Landscape Design of Alys Beach

A Mediterranean Escape: Exploring the Landscape Design of Alys Beach

Nestled along Florida’s scenic 30A, Alys Beach feels like a slice of the Mediterranean, with its white-washed architecture, fragrant rosemary, and tranquil water features. The town’s landscape design is a masterclass in beauty and resilience, featuring drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plants like Tuscan Blue Rosemary, Agave, Olive Trees, and Horsetail Rush. These selections not only enhance the aesthetic but also thrive in the coastal climate with minimal upkeep.

As you wander through its serene pathways, the gentle sounds of fountains and reflecting pools create an oasis of calm, making Alys Beach an unforgettable inspiration for sustainable, elegant landscaping.

Camellia Japonica

Camellias otherwise known as Camellia Japonicas have a dark evergreen foliage and a beautiful floral display which makes it a great addition to your landscape in the winter.

SOIL

This flower is particularly beautiful because of the bold blooming flowers against the dark green of the leaves.

Although almost everyone is familiar with Camellias this outstanding shrub deserves more widespread planting. Now is an excellent time to select camellias because they are in bloom now and you can get a first hand image of what the flowers look like at any local nursery.

Azaleas - Rhododendron

Azaleas are arguably the favorite shrub of New Orleans residents. A member of the Rhododendron family, azaleas can be seen blooming in almost everyone's yard. They come in white and varying shades of pink and red. I have even seen purple. You can easily find a variety that will work in your landscape.

IMG_2074.jpg

SOIL

Azalea performs best in acidic, moist but well-drained soil. The soil should be loose and sandy; planting in clay is asking for root rot.

IMG_3857.jpg

SUNLIGHT

Most azaleas thrive in partial sun or the filtered shade of tall trees. You will often see them under the magnificent live oaks here in the city.

MAINTENANCE

Just after the blooms fade is an ideal time to prune, mulch and fertilize with an acidic fertilizer such as cottonseed meal which is organic or commercial azalea food. Pine straw is the best option for mulch.

Backyard Makeover at New Orleans Lakefront

For this project we graded the backyard for proper water flow, and installed paver and limestone, and new sod. We also constructed a fire pit, retaining wall, and flower beds to completely transform this Lakefront backyard.

Peter and his colleagues did a great job at transforming our backyard into an outdoor space we’re looking forward to using for many years to come.

Lantana

Mid to late April is generally the best time to plant Lantana, but with this year's mild winter and early spring, now is a great time to incorporate them into  your landscape. Once temperatures warm up these plants will grow and flower abundantly.

SOIL & MULCH

Well-drained, slightly acidic soil is the best. Mulch is not necessary but can help to control weeds during the summer.  It is suggested for winter to protect plant roots from frost.

WATER & BLOOMS

Frequent water in well-drained soil is recommended to achieve maximum bloom. Lantana does not need heavy fertilizer. It can benefit from an all-purpose garden fertilizer in early spring.
